PalmOne to shut down Palm.Net with nearly
no notice or warning!

On July 30th, Palm (PalmOne Corp.) announced that it will be ceasing operations of Palm.net on August 31, 2004.  Palm.net is the wireless service that is used by the Palm VII, Palm VIIx, and Palm i705 PDA's for their wireless services. See Palm's notice here.

Needless to say, we were shocked that Palm would make a decision affecting tens, if not hundreds of thousands of businesses.  When AT&T and Verizon decided to stop providing their CDPD service (the old analog service), they were required to provide 2 YEARS notification!

Why would Palm do this?  We have no idea.  Their stock is almost triple what it was a year ago, and every major wireless carrier is selling their newest PDA, the TREO 600.  All we know is that thousands of business will be scrambling to replace their wireless hardware.

I have a Palm VII, what can I do about it?  Well, we have some options for you.  Your Pocket Merchant card reader and printer will work with dozens of wireless PDA's, changing only the $10 cable.

We sell the Sprint TREO for only $200, but we will 'credit' existing Palm VIIx customers the full $50 you paid for the Palm VIIx ($349 system, less the $299 for the Pocket Merchant) toward the TREO 300, making the upgrade price only $150!

There are a wide variety of choices to replace your Palm. Generally, we recommend you select a model from the same carrier that handles your cell phone.  This way, you can get a wireless PDA phone, and just move your number over to it, without signing up with any new service provider!  We have compiled a list of compatible units organized by carrier:

All of these units work with our award winning Pocket Verifier technology, and most require only a different $10 cable change for your Pocket Merchant!  We have keyed the list to let you know about the availability and differences among the different units:

[1] No longer available from the supplier, but you can usually pick them up on eBay.
[2] Uses the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system, has a much larger screen.
[3] Uses the Symbian operating system.
[4] Requires Pocket Spectrum Bluetooth-based reader and printer.
  [5] Recommended highly by AMSI

We do not sell most of these units,  as we only purchase and inventory wireless PDA's that we can get great deals on, to pass on to our customers.  (That is how we were able to sell the Palm VIIx's in our packages for only $50)  Other PDA's actually cost us more to purchase than a consumer can get from their local store, as the carrier subsidizes the sale in order to get the cellular service contract.

Rest assured, no matter which version of our software you need for your new PDA, you are covered by our "FREE UPGRADES" policy, and you can download the latest version for your new PDA from our upgrades page.  If you are switching to Pocket PC or Symbian operating systems, just give us a call for a new activation key.  If you are switching to Palm (even OS5, like the Treo 600), your existing activation key will still work.

Clearly, Palm's action is reprehensible, irresponsible, and reflects a callous and uncaring attitude towards the customers that made it as large as it is today.  As always, we will strive to make quality and affordable choices available to our customers, and give them the support and ongoing attention they so richly deserve.
