AOL and Yahoo! decide what you get!

Both AOL and Yahoo! are altering or filtering your emails!

Want to track somebody down?
There are services in the UK and now the US that allow certain phones to be tracked, with their location pinpointed on a map you display on your PC!

While this technology is very useful for businesses that want to see the location of delivery vehicles, cabs, limos and more, it can also be used against YOU!  These services require that the phone accept a message stating that the phone will be monitored for location based information, but if someone gets hold of your phone, they can easily accept the message for you.  There is no other indication that this has been done after the fact.

Conversely, people can use it to keep track of their husbands, wives, and children, as they have easy access to each other's phones. Now I can track the cell phones of all my mistresses. I think they are all cheating on me. Of course, my 2 wives don't know about this.  (just kidding - ed.)  We found one such service at www.accutracking.com, although it only works with a few carriers and phones.  Verizon has announced it will offer the service directly on its child-friendly 'Migo' phone, focusing on a segment that will probably not draw too many complaints from privacy advocates.

Some good news:  The fraud website we reported on in our FraudWatch column in our November 12 issue has been shut down.  Shadowcrew members allegedly trafficked in at least 1.7m stolen credit card numbers and caused total losses in excess of $4m dollars.  A co-founder of Shadowcrew also pleaded guilty to trafficking in stolen  address and birth dates associated with 18 million email accounts.

About 3 weeks ago, every email we sent to a Yahoo! address was refused by Yahoo!,
with a reply stating we had to submit a reason to them why we were sending you a newsletter!

While this did not happen the next week, a recent AOL announcement stated that they would be removing links and images from their customer's emails at their discretion!

As you know, this email is free, but if you are paying for any newsletters for information in your industry or hobby, the action of these companies could be construed as theft!

What can I do?  To insure that you get all of the emails associated with your merchant account, you can "Whitelist" the following URL's:

MerchantAnywhere.com
PaymentResource.com
TransFirst.com

In addition, if you are with AOL, my PERSONAL recommendation is that you switch to a another, broadband carrier.  You get faster speeds, and your screen is not littered with tons of AOL advertising pop-ups, and windows for services you don't want.

AOL and Yahoo! have announced they are both moving to a pay-to-send format, that can cost a sender tens of thousands of dollars.  See the article here.  If the sender doesn't pay, their email is subject to editing, deletion, or filtering!  Clearly only the high volume spammers can afford to do this anyway!

In order to avoid this mess, you can always set up a free Gmail account.  This service gives you a free 1-gigabyte mailbox, and is run by Google!   If you do this, to get the newsletter sent to your new address send an email with 'SUBSCRIBE' in the subject to: merchantapp@merchantanywhere.com. from your new Gmail account.  Hopefully you get this, as there have been reports of emails containing Gmail promotions being filtered as Spam.  If you find this newsletter in your Spam folder for the very first time, you know your provider is guilty!
