Two vulnerabilities in the popular Firefox browser have been rated "extremely critical" because exploit code is now available to take advantage of them. The cross-site scripting and remote system access flaws were discovered in Firefox version 1.0.3, but other versions may also be affected, said security company Secunia, which issued the ratings Sunday. If you visit a malicious Web site, it can steal cookie information from other Web sites you had previously visited. The attacker could then use that information to engage in identity theft or gain access to other password-protected sites that the victim visited. An unpatched flaw in some versions of the Netscape browser could let an attacker into vulnerable systems, security company Secunia has warned. The vulnerability is "highly critical," according to an advisory released by the Danish company late Tuesday. Version 6.2.3 and 7.2 of Netscape are affected and other versions may also be susceptible, the company said. The flaw could allow a hacker to launch a buffer overflow attack, which could crash the browser or enable the attacker to execute code on the compromised system. Secunia's advice for dealing with the issue is to "use another product." Dashboard, one of the features of Apple Computer's latest OS, Tiger, could be ripe for exploitation by porn scammers. Apple has been encouraging developers to create new widgets for Tiger's Dashboard--a semi-transparent layer of everyday, often-used applications such as a calculator or currency converter that appears over the user's desktop. These can automatically install themselves on users' desktops when a web site is visited using Apple's Safari browser. This is a golden opportunity for porn scammers, enabling them to auto-install widgets that can hijack browsers. The funny thing is that once that widget is there, according to Apple, you CANNOT remove it. Widgets cannot be removed directly from the toolbar, but they can however be deleted from the Library folder. The user who can't find their Library folder is stuck. |
