Price breakthroughs on TREO 650!

Treo 650's are offered by the carriers at new LOW prices!

In a misguided effort to prevent users from actually listening to music that they spend their hard earned cash on, Sony music has placed a program on their audio CD's that can open your PC to hackers if you play the audio CD on your computer!

The Sony BMG software installs itself deeply inside a hard drive when a CD is played on a PC. The technology uses "rootkit" techniques to hide itself. Experts have condemned this cloaking mechanism, saying it could be abused by virus writers. The first remote-control Trojan horses that take advantage of the veil provided by Sony BMG have already surfaced.

To protect Windows users, Microsoft plans to update Windows AntiSpyware and the Malicious Software Removal Tool as well as the online scanner on Windows Live Safety Center to detect and remove the Sony BMG software, the software maker said.

Windows AntiSpyware is Microsoft's Spyware-fighting software that is currently available as a test version and used by millions of people worldwide. Microsoft provides weekly updates for Windows AntiSpyware. The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is updated monthly and is part of Microsoft's monthly patch releases.

Sony has recalled all of their CD's, the state of Texas is filing a lawsuit over this, and our advice is to return any Sony CD's you own back to the store you bought them from...  Even if you use the removal tool, Sony's CD's will just replace the Trojan the next time you (or anyone in your family) plays them on your PC.

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom The tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed.

Rather embarrassing for Sony, their whole scheme can be easily defeated by placing a fingernail-sized piece of opaque tape on the outside rim on the data side of the CD.  Your player will play the audio (recorded from the center out), but be unable to read the rootkit Trojan (recorded from the outside-in)!
