Annual credit report- YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY!!!!  There are dozens of TV ads, and thousands of websites that offer to give you credit reports and additional services.  

The "additional services" is the catch.  they will charge you a monthly fee, sometimes deferred, if you cancel within a certain period (they are hoping you will forget), in exchange for services you may or may not need.

Not all of these are scams, and some of them perform a necessary and valuable service if your identity has been compromised, or if you are watching your credit.  

Almost all of them "hide" the fact that you can get your credit report from ALL THREE agencies once per year for absolutely nothing.

The "Big Three"- Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian, in order to comply with new Federal regulations sponsor www.annualcreditreport.com, which allows consumers to download their reports once per year at absolutely NO CHARGE.  

They DO charge a small fee to calculate your FICO score, which seems to skirt the intention, but apparently there is a loophole in the regs.

In researching this column, we discovered that people have set up sites to "snag" you if you mistype the URL, we found sites with the misspellings for "Annnual", and "Amnual" almost immediately.

If you need the extra services the other websites offer, fine, but if you are simply looking for the FREE credit report that they all promise, without spending any money or having to cancel, go to the AnnualCreditReport site, it looks like this:
